Medals for the Indianapolis International Baroque Competition

The Indianapolis International Baroque Competition is hosted and presented by the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra and Indianapolis Early Music. In 2016, I was contacted about creating an edition of five medals for the competition, which would take place that July at the Eugene and Marilyn Click Indiana History Center.

The request was for something contemporary that evoked the Baroque style; I created several custom designs based on the rays of the sun, which the panel then voted on. There were a lot of interesting interpretations of the chosen design; the fall 2016 newsletter commemorating the event noted, "Some have suggested that the rays signify Louis XIV, the French 'Sun King,' who loved and supported Baroque music; others see the buildings that surround Monument Circle in Indianapolis, or even the interior columns in the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, where the Early Music Festival is held. But most significantly, the "sun rising" theme reflects the professional promise of the young artists who participate in the competition. "

The medals were acid etched and constructed in bronze from three separate layers. The first place medal was also plated in gold. All five were given pin stems and presented on a set of colorful ribbons, pink for Indianapolis Early Music and blue for the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, to the winners: Alexa Raine-Wright (Grand Prize), Dominic Favia, Augusta McKay Lodge, Nate Helgeson, and Vincent Lauzer (finalists). It was my honor to create this work for this beautiful competition and I hope to continue work with these organizations in the future. In 2019 I created a second series of the same design and construction for the 2020 competition, which was postponed due to the pandemic.
